In October, I got engaged to my long-time boyfriend. While I had been looking forward to this event and anticipating it for months and even years, I wasn’t quite sure how my life would change once I had a ring on my finger. I knew wedding plans would be in my future, but I didn’t know we’d soon be arguing over where to spend the holidays once we officially tie the knot.
In the past, I’ve always flown to my parent’s house in Alabama for Christmas, and he’s always hopped on a plane to Colorado. Now, however, the question looms: Whose family is going to get left in the cold come Christmas?
Anyone have any tips on how a couple living in California can keep the folks in the South and the parents in the Rocky Mountains in the holiday spirit?

As soon as I polish off the last plate of leftover Thanksgiving turkey, I start thinking of gifts for the people on my Christmas list. Some people, like my sister and my fianc, are easy. My sis is a stylish gal who’ll always go for a nice pair of shiny stilettos or the latest pair of designer jeans. My fiance is a lover of all sports. Buy him a signed Maples Leaf jersey or tickets to a Packer’s game and he’s on cloud nine.
Other people on my list however, aren’t so easy. By “other people” I really mean my parents. In the past few years, I’ve bought my mom every kitchen gadget Crate and Barrel makes and every cookbook the Food Network chefs have penned. My poor dad has received a waterproof backpack to take canoeing, a Germany calendar (he’s from Heidelberg), a pair of Crocs and a whole slew of other “Oh crap, it’s almost Christmas! What the hell do I get for Dad?” gifts.
This year, I’d like to give my parents a joint gift. I was thinking of tickets to the theater or maybe even a voucher to enjoy a weekend at a nice hotel in a nearby city.Do any of you have any suggestions? Have any of you ever wowed your parents with a truly stellar Christmas gift?
